The Master in Geography Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada is the first graduate-level geography program established in Indonesia. As such, it has extensive experience in developing education, research, and community service related to the field of geography. This program is a monodisciplinary master’s program under the Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Formally, the program was established in 1993 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 680/DIKTI/Kep/1993. The role of geographic science has become increasingly important alongside advancements in science and technology, as well as the growing complexity of environmental and regional issues. These developments require highly competent experts in geography. The importance of this program’s graduates is further emphasized by: (1) the increasing challenges related to natural and human resources, which require professionals in Physical Geography and Human Geography; (2) the implementation of regional autonomy, which demands professionals in regional development; and (3) the growing significance of geospatial data in development planning. Graduates of the Master’s Program in Geography are equipped to become geographers capable of observing, identifying, and applying scientific reasoning to phenomena in the atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and anthroposphere through spatial, ecological, and regional complex approaches.
Initially, the program offered three areas of specialization: Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Regional Development. In 2007, the Dean of the Faculty of Geography established a new specialization through Decree No. 188/P/SK/HT/2007, namely the Master’s Program in Coastal and Watershed Management Planning (MPPDAS), as a specialization under the Master’s Program in Geography. On April 20, 2007, the UGM Academic Senate issued Approval Letter No. 74/SA/2007, which included the approval for the establishment of the MPPDAS program within the Faculty of Geography. This program was then conducted separately from the regular program using a block lecture system. Subsequently, in 2019, the Dean of the Faculty of Geography issued Decree No. 2082.1/UN1/FGE/KPT/SETD/2019 regarding the establishment of the Regional Development specialization under the Master in Geography Study Program.
